Worthington is committed to making our operations greener—literally! Our Columbus, Ohio, locations maintain more than 100 acres, including our Corporate buildings, production facilities, Company medical center and our privately owned park. These properties feature more than 1,500 flower species with a focus on native plants and pollinator-friendly perennials.
We’ve even incorporated plant life on the roof covering a portion of our Corporate headquarters. In addition to increasing biodiversity and green space in an urban area, the green roof provides natural insulation, helping to maintain indoor temperatures and reduce energy usage.
Mark Miller, Head Horticulturist, Worthington Enterprises
"The roof was designed to use rainwater runoff to provide hydration for the plants. It incorporates drip irrigation to conserve water while filtering it before it drains into the surrounding environment. Drought and heat-tolerant sedum plants grow on the roof and attract local pollinators such as butterflies, bees and hummingbirds."
Not all of our rooftops boast plants—in some locations, we’re opting for solar panels as another way to achieve sustainable operations. We installed solar panels on half of our Corporate headquarters in 2021, producing roughly 300 kWh of clean energy each year—or about 30% of the building’s annual electric use. Our Raufoss, Norway, facility installed more than 32,000 square feet of solar panels that generate 4% of overall energy consumption for the facility, with space mapped to replicate the footprint on an adjacent building.
