Having been raised in Columbus, Ohio, the positive things I’d heard about Worthington Enterprises motivated me to seek out the Environmental, Health and Safety internship opportunity at the Company’s Westerville, Ohio facility. The experience was both insightful and rewarding, providing hands-on workplace experience as I prepared to enter my senior year at West Virginia University as an Environmental and Natural Resource Economics major.

EHS prioritizes both worker safety and environmental compliance. The department helps ensure workplaces have health and safety programs in place so employees can perform their duties while mitigating risk. By adhering to environmental regulations and implementing sustainable practices, EHS also contributes to minimizing the company's ecological footprint and preserving natural resources for future generations. Through the summer, I got to see this first-hand and see the meaning of EHS through a new lens.

During my internship, I conducted a variety of critical tasks that contributed to my technical skillset but also deepened my understanding of regulatory compliance and the great measure of responsibility that falls on EHS.

One of the most impactful aspects was learning about the implementation of the plant's Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) and Tier II reporting requirements—both being crucial to ensuring environmental protection and compliance with federal regulations. Additionally, updating the ladder inventory across the entire facility and conducting weekly safety checks, such as AED inspections, eyewash station inspections, oil storage checks and pH readings highlighted the importance of strict attention to detail in maintaining workplace safety. Finally, I’ve learned that problem-solving is an important ability to have. Whether addressing minor risks like trip hazards or tackling major challenges such as preventing fires from industrial equipment, EHS professionals play a crucial role in safeguarding both people and the environment.

In my short time with Worthington, I witnessed the Company’s dedication to the belief that people are its greatest asset. This was apparent through efforts to ensure employees are equipped to work safely and the emphasis on hazard communications—clear and effective communication about potential workplace hazards. Worthington’s success is not just a result of innovative practices but also because of its commitment to fostering a safe and supportive environment for its employees. This resonates deeply with me as I consider my future career path. Through my internship at Worthington Enterprises, I've gained valuable understanding into the importance of EHS in ensuring workplace safety, environmental management and the overall success of a company.
